Apple today announced the iPhone 18 at its annual September event, introducing the most significant redesign since the iPhone X. The new device features a titanium frame, a 6.3-inch ProMotion OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, and a breakthrough camera system powered entirely by on-device artificial intelligence.
The standout feature is the new A19 Bionic chip, built on a 3-nanometer process, which Apple says delivers 40% faster neural processing than its predecessor. This enables real-time AI photo editing — users can remove objects, adjust lighting, and even change backgrounds with a single tap, all processed locally on the device.
"This is the most capable iPhone we've ever made," said Apple CEO Tim Cook during the keynote at Apple Park. "The iPhone 18 combines our most advanced hardware with the power of Apple Intelligence to give users capabilities they've never had before."
The camera system includes a 48-megapixel main sensor with sensor-shift stabilization, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide lens, and a new 48-megapixel periscope telephoto lens capable of 6x optical zoom. Apple says low-light performance has improved by 50% compared to the iPhone 17.
The iPhone 18 starts at $999 for the base model and will be available for pre-order this Friday, with shipping beginning September 22. Analysts expect strong demand, with Wedbush Securities predicting this could be Apple's biggest upgrade cycle since the introduction of 5G.
